Last updated: 21/11/2022

I am an Ofsted registered childminder, with 17 years experience, based between central Thatcham and Kennet School. I have a three bedroom house with a large garden set up for childminding, and live with my husband and three children. I have recommendation letters and positive feedback from all my families, as the majority of my childminding children have stayed with me for years - only leaving to move up to school or out of the area.

Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

I have a good understanding of children's development through my own experience as a parent, years of experience childminding, and my studies doing the NVQ3. If I recognised a potentional issue I would continue my observations and record them, and discuss it with parents. If I had permission from parents, I could take it further with the relevant professionals.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

If the child is non-verbal, parents would be updated daily through their diary. I do termly reports and ask parents to read and feedback on their child's development. I would work with parents to provide any additional care needed, or to work with other professionals to offer it.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

All children are individual, and develop at different rates. Whilst I follow the EYFS, I plan my activities and adapt to each child's ability and work on areas to develop. I would continue to observe the child in line with the EYFS and my termly reports would reflect this - if a child wasn't reaching their expected stage of development parents would be already be aware through discussion.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We learn through play, so activities are adapted to individual children's abilities and their next steps. I work closely with parents to offer encouragement and strategies that mirror what they use at home.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

I treat all children as individuals so they all have their own next steps planned which are shared with parents. I can work with other professionals to offer continuous support between home and my setting, and to develop my skills to provide this additional level of care. I can utilise resources from the child's home if necessary.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

If the child is non-verbal I complete daily diairies, these are uploaded daily and the parents have immediate access to see what their child has done during the day. I also upload observations which form part of the child's learning journey which parents also have 24 hour access to. I complete termly reports as a summary of the child's progress, and ask for parents feedback on this report.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

I make sure activities are adaptable for all children, regardless of ability, and that they are chosen with a purpose, and to support children's learning and development. I risk assess trips carefully and the majority will be undertaken with at least one other childminder as well. I take all equipment and medication with me, along with parents contact details in case of emergency.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Unfortunately my home is not suited for wheelchair users at this time.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

I support all children in school-readiness to the best of their abilities - which for some includes putting on their own coat and shoes, or doing it up, self-care including potty training, hand washing and nose wiping, and sometimes other activities including name recognition, scissor use and pencil holding, depending on the child and their interest.

I complete a transition report so that the new setting is aware of the child's ability - this is shared with the parents first so that they are aware of it's contents.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

I maintain my SEF to evaluate on my SEN provision, and undertake any relevant training offered by the LA. I encourage regular verbal and email feedback from parents.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

I can be contacted on 07925290120.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

I ask parents for feedback regularly. I have a complaints policy which parents sign and are able to access 24 hours a day. There is also provision to leave complaints or compliments on Babys Days - the online paperwork system I use with parents.
