Help create a mascot for the Royal Berkshire Hospital children and young people’s department

Visits to hospitals and other health facilities can be a daunting experience for children and young people. Mascots help play a significant role in engaging and captivating young audiences and inspire them to participate in activity.

We are looking for four mascots which have friendly and approachable characters that will engage children and young people and help them feel comfortable when they are in hospital or attending a clinic and to encourage them to get involved with their care.

Rather than asking professional illustrators, the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT) want to tap into the enthusiasm and creativity of our children and young people across Reading and Berkshire to get involved.

RBFT is inviting children and young people across Berkshire to enter a competition and design a mascot that could help other children navigate their way around the hospital and support them in the care they receive. The four winning mascots will help support our younger patients when they visit the Trust as an in or out-patient.

We are looking for four colourful characters that are imaginary and original. The mascot could be an animal, or sea or even a space creature that captures the excitement and the imagination of other children and young people. Don’t forget to give your mascots really interesting names.

The competition is open children and young people aged between 1 and 16 years who think that their mascot design could be an official new member of the RBFT team! We want to inspire children and young people to think differently, creatively and to let their imaginations run wild.

Submissions will be judged on creativity and artistic quality, as well as how well they represent the new RBFT children and young people’s strategy. Entries also should include a brief story about the character and should be no more than 250 words. The competition closes 30th September and the winners will be announced in October and invited to attend a special ceremony.

Entries can be hand drawn or submitted electronically. Please send your entry via email to: engagement@royalberkshire.nhs.uk with the subject line: CYP Mascot competition.
