Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

Parents are the main carers, staff will listen and respond to any concerns raised.  A meeting would be arranged between the parent, key person and named SENco.

All staff are required to monitor each child’s development and learning through observation and record keeping.  Through this process staff are able to identify any child who may be experiencing difficulties or is not meeting his Early Learning Goals.

By working in partnership with parents, involving them in all discussions, gathering any information to support the child will ensure that an inclusive practice is maintained.

The Nursery is guided by Development Matters / Early Learning Goals.  Tracking sheets are used to monitor a child’s progress in all the 7 areas of learning.  If after a period of assessment or observations there are concerns for the child discussions will be had with the SENco who will then involve the parents in the decision making on how to move things forward.  Although each case is different it may be decided that the child requires an Individual Play Plan, or advice from outside agencies may be sought.  The SENco will liaise with external bodies, key person and parents and will review regularly.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We consider communication to be a key element at the Nursery. We aim to develop partnerships between parents and carers based on mutual trust and respect which promote the sharing of information and knowledge for the benefit of the children.  Parents will be fully involved in any meetings and discussions that are held between the key person, SENco or outside agencies

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

It is a requirement of the Nursery to meet the needs of all children.  If a child has been identified as needing extra support an Individual Play Plan will be put in place.  Advice may be sought from outside agencies and if required specialist equipment will be obtained.  The SENco will be responsible for carrying out or delegating specific duties or tasks depending on the child’s needs or requirements to ensure the EYFS is being adapted to suit the child’s individual needs.  These may include specific observation techniques, directed learning activities or attending training sessions for staff involved.   This will be shared with the parents and regularly reviewed.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

Visual timetables are used throughout the Nursery along with colourful and language appropriate wall displays.  A wide selection of books and music in all languages is also available.   Staff have Makaton training which is used throughout the Nursery.  The Nursery has access to specialist play equipment if required.  we also have a Sensory Room which is used by all of the children.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

We are members of ECAT and we have an Early Language Lead Practitioner who has received training and has a role in supporting children with speech and language difficulties.  Any programmes that children have been put on by external agencies are closely followed by the child’s key person e.g. speech therapists, physiotherapists etc.  Records are kept in a child’s file and any support needed is followed through by the key person.  A SENco register is kept and monitored.  We have access to any specialised equipment we might need and are well supported by outside agencies who we will consult if we have concerns regarding a child.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Each child has a Learning Journal which monitor’s a child’s progress.  This is available to parents at all times.  Parental consultations are held on a regular basis though we do have an open door policy where parents are able to talk to staff at any time.   A tracking sheet is kept for each child which is updated regularly by the child’s key person.  Progress checks are completed and shared with parents along with transition reports which are forwarded to a child’s new setting.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

Our activities / outings take place on the Racecourse, children are never taken off site.  Staff ratios are increased to allow for all children to be included.  Individual Risk Assessments are completed if necessary.  Specialist equipment is also obtained if required.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Our Nursery is all one level with no steps allowing it to be accessible by all children including wheelchair users.  We have accessible toilets for both adults and children.

There is also an Induction loop at reception for visitors or parents who have a hearing impairment.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

Transition reports are sent to the next setting, if a child is moving onto school the teacher will visit the setting and have a discussion with the key person.  Visits are encouraged between settings.  If a parent chooses to send their child to our setting, meetings will be held with the parents before the child starts to ensure that the Nursery is able to meet all their needs.  If necessary staff will be trained accordingly and specialist equipment brought in.  The SENco will be involved in all the meetings and will ensure that contact is made with outside agencies if and when necessary.  Regular reviews will be made once the child has started to ensure we meet all their needs.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

The Nursery has appropriate Policies and Procedures in place which are reviewed regularly to ensure the effectiveness of our provision.  Risk Assessments are also reviewed annually.  The SENco will assess and evaluate the provision that we are providing by doing peer observations and monitoring Learning Journals.  Regular reviews are made on any IPP’s that are in place to ensure that the short term targets for the children are being met, what resources are being used and the nature of staff intervention.  Parents are also able to contribute to the evaluation by adding comments in their journals or speaking to the child’s key person.  Staff are encouraged to be involved with SEF and reflective practice.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

For further enquiries please contact either Rosina Reynolds – Manager - or Jane Bassett - Assistant Manager on 01635 48969.  Alternatively all details can be found on our web site.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

Feedback is always welcome from parents which can either be done via emails or letter.  We also have an open door policy where parents are welcome to talk to us at any time.
