Last updated: 06/01/2022

My name is Katie Wrixon, I am an Ofsted registered childminder in Calcot, with over 15 years experience as a childcare professional. I provide a safe and stimulating home environment for your children to play, discover and flourish.

For my husband, 4 year old daughter, 2 year old son and I, our home is a place where we feel relaxed and comfortable, able to do the things we enjoy most and we are sure that the children who join us here will feel the same. Our home has a cosy reading nook in the lounge along with a conservatory playroom full of toys and ‘loose parts’ to explore. Our garden has a patio area for chalking and sensory play, digging and planting areas along with tyres, stepping stones and ‘bits and bobs’ to create obstacle courses.

Whether you child enjoy dinosaurs, imaginative play, crafts, stories, construction or treasure hunts, here each child’s individual interests and needs are planned for and followed. We love being outside with nature, making new friends in our community at local groups and taking special trips to extend our learning. We attend toddler groups, music sessions, story and rhyme time at the library and meet our new friends at the park.

I try my very best to be flexible with families and so if there are days or hours outside of my normal opening hours then please do contact me and ask if I am able to accommodate your request. Many thanks.

Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

When each new child starts at my setting, I assess their individual needs through discussions with their parent's/ carer's and looking at where they are developmentally, known as their starting points. During their time at my setting I carry out ongoing observations of their play and well being, and will carry out a 2 year developmental progress check. This will be shared with parent/ carer(s) and any concerns which may have been highlighted will be discussed too. If at any point you have concerns regarding the progress and development your child is making, then this can be talked through to make sure that your child is receiving the support needed.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

Communication between parent/ carer(s) and myself is vital to help each child feel settled, secure and happy. Every child will have their own Learning Journey which includes photos of what they have been doing and observations along with a tracker noting their developmental milestones and next steps. These will be shared with parent/ carer(s) regularly. I also share a daily diary of each child's day, what they have been doing/ enjoyed and their routine. Ideas for activities they might like to do at home, following an interest, are also shared and vice versa if they particularly enjoyed something over the weekend. The more that we openly communicate the more beneficial it is for your child's all round development and well being.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

Every child is different, in personality, appearance and development. Because children develop at different ages and stages, I provide activities and experiences which follow your child's particular interests and needs at that time. By continuously monitoring and observing your child I can plan opportunities for their learning and skills to be extended. Through this cycle of observing, planning and assessing I am able to provide activities which extend learning and adapt the EYFS curriculum to the needs of each child.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

Firstly I will work closely with the child's parent/ carer(s) to determine what strategies are used and how effective they are. Once this discussion has taken place I can adapt my teaching skills accordingly. This may mean that I use resources to help heighten communication for example a PECS board, large font books, audio books, or makaton signing. I can also borrow resources from other childcare providers and work alongside them if a child needs closer care. By providing a stable routine and children learning what comes next, it helps them to gain a feeling security which is comforting to them.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

Once I have discussed with parent/ carer(s) about any additional support that child is receiving from other professionals, I will take note of any resources which may be needed or further training which would help me to better support your child. I will also work closely alongside other involved professionals and liaise with them regularly to benefit your child.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

From initial starting points, ongoing observations will be added to each child's Learning Journey, alongside photographs and their development tracker where their progress is updated each term so that new goals they have met can be seen. These can be taken home by parent/ carer(s) at any time and adding their own observations and goals is encouraged. I also keep you updated regularly on their progress through daily dairy, message, email and talking to you at drop off and collection.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

All activities are planned carefully to ensure inclusive play, engagement and learning take place. I am able to adapt activities so that they are accessible and developmentally appropriate for every child. Children at Little Leapers learn that we must share, help and include all of our friend's and respect our differences. All outings are risk assessed before taking place and during this I will decide if extra adult support is needed and arrange this accordingly.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Unfortunately, my home does not have wheelchair access due to small entrance and no toilet facilities on the ground floor.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

I support children moving onto a new setting or school through open discussions with them regarding the change approaching and what will happen. I am happy for people from other settings to visit your child at my setting and if numbers allow, also visit the new setting with your child. I encourage children approaching school age to become independent and practice their personal and social and emotional skills.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

I always welcome feedback from parent/ carer(s) anytime they wish to give it, regarding the service I provide. Feedback questionnaires are given out for parent/ carer(s) to complete and all comments are taken on board. I take on board advice from other practitioners and carry out self evaluations for my setting.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

If you are considering registering your child, then please get in touch. You can phone me (Katie) on 07985770630 or email littleleaperschildcare@outlook.com. Enquiries are always welcome with no obligation to sign up. You can arrange a visit or just ask questions.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

I am happy for parent/ carer(s) to discuss any feedback, positive or negative with me personally. This can be done face to face, through our daily diary, email or message. I also have a complaint procedure in place which parent/ carer(s) can follow and a complaints form can be given. Details of where to address complaints to Ofsted can also be found on the wall of my setting.
