Emotional Health Academy (EHA) and Emotional Health Triage (EHT)

Last updated: 06/12/2023

The Emotional Health Academy (EHA) is West Berkshire’s support for mild to moderate mental health in children and young people. Our goal is to help children and young people as early as possible and to stop emotional health problems from getting worse.

The Academy is made up of a team of Emotional Health Workers who work in schools and offer parenting workshops, and Primary Mental Health Workers who assess and support young people as well as providing Emotional Health Worker supervision. The Primary Mental Health Workers accept referrals from the Emotional Health Triage only.

Help can be accessed through the Emotional Health Triage service.

Emotional Health Triage (EHT) is the way that West Berkshire services work together to make sure children and young people get the right emotional and mental health support when they need it. It is a front door to many different early help services around emotional and mental health. One potential support option is the EHA but there are many other organisations and avenues for support which may be recommended.

General Provider

Is your service accessible? (consider in general terms how you make your service accessible, in addition to any specific premises issues)

Yes - we have access to meetings rooms on a ground floor of West Street House. We have flexibility to visit young people at school or at home as well.

What are the eligibility criteria for your service? (please include any age restrictions, types of need catered for etc)

The service is designed to support children and young people with emerging mild to moderate mental health needs across the Primary and Secondary age ranges. Providing the young person is in a West Berkshire school or has a West Berkshire address or has a West Berkshire GP, we are able to accept referrals for triage.

How are referrals/applications made to your service? (include details of who can refer/apply and referral and application process)

Emotional Health Triage referrals can be placed by parents, schools, GP's and other organisations, and also by the young person themselves if they are at secondary school. Please note the young person self referral form is different to the parent / professional form, which is the 4 page document. Please make sure the correct form is chosen as we are unable to accept it otherwise. If in doubt, please call us on 01635 519018.

The referral will be logged and further information obtained. It will then be either signposted or be taken to our triage panel meeting, which occurs weekly. An outcome letter will be sent to parents and/or the referrer.

What is your service standard for responding to referrals/accessing services? (include timescales for responding to referrals and accessing services)

We aim to contact parents within 5-10 days of receiving a referral for further discussion, and for referrals to be discussed at our triage panel meeting if required within 21 days. Please note this may be longer in times of high demand. If the child or young person is allocated to the EHA itself, they will be given an assessment date. The waiting time for an assessment varies due, again, to demand.
