St Peter's preschool is located in the rural village of Bradfield Southend. It is part of the St Peter's Church building, on Southend road. We can cater for up to 24 children in a session and maintain excellent staff to children ratios.

The aim is to provide affordable pre-school education for all, providing safe, appropriate play and care facilities in which parents are encouraged to be involved. We provide equal opportunities to all children and work closely with our families to achieve this.

£25.00 Registration fee
A £25 registration fee is charged to secure a place at St. Peter’s preschool, this also covers initial administration costs. This fee will be refundable if your child is already accessing any government funding.
When children go over the 15 hours funding they are charged £5.00 per hour. Lunch club is £3.50 and families provide their child's packed lunch.
Snack charge - 75p contribution towards a healthy mid-morning snack is charged at 75p for each am session that your child attends.

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

When we welcome a child into the setting, the family completes a form to tell us about the child, their family, interests etc. If a particular need is identified by the family this can be put on the form. We will listen to and meet with parents from the time the family joins the preschool. Whilst in setting, we use an SEN graduated response system, we observe all children, ensure they are meeting targets and address any concerns as soon as they arise. We will ask to meet parents if we need to put any plans in place to meet specific needs, using the SEND code of practice. Other tools we use include, Development Matters guidance, speech and language milestones and materials obtained from various SEND training courses.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

Our preschool is in constant communication with all parents. We will set up an appointment with you if your child needs extra support. We use an SEN graduated response system whereby your child's key worker plans and differentiates activities for your child. Observations and evaluations are made and if targets are consistently not being met, they will discuss it with the special needs coordinator and you will be contacted. We will discuss with you alternative approaches to learning. If an SENS (Special Educational Needs Support Plan) or SAPP (Support and Achievement Play Plan) is appropriate, we will check that you are in agreement and follow this plan. All staff will work with this plan and upon agreement with you we will determine how often it is reviewed.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We encourage children to work together at preschool and we always put children into stage appropriate groups. Their stage of development determines how we meet their needs. If a child has an SENS or SAPP we will work one to one with them, one step at a time and always develop their understanding starting with what is very familiar to them to increase confidence. Our ethos is to encourage independent problem solving so we ask them to work it out for themselves first and then look for help after that. We use information that you give us and the interests your child shows to help plan the activities. We believe that if you keep the child's interests at the heart of the planning, you have an engaged, motivated child. Your child will also be able to contribute their own thoughts about preschool as part of the reporting process and  this can help shape the planning. The supervisor plans all the activities and the staff look at your child's targets and differentiate the activites to be stage appropriate.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

If your child has additional needs or learning difficulties, we are always flexible in our approach. If something does not work, we look for other solutions. We use many visual aids around the setting for example, a clear pictoral timetable. Staff will use short, simple sentences. Our special needs coordinator can use Makaton signing at the same time as speaking to your child. The pre-school will seek additional services, advice and resources to support a child's development.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

The environment at preschool supports children who may have additional needs or SEND. We have large double doors and ramps. The areas are kept clear of clutter to give a feeling of space and help visually impaired children. The walls are kept relatively plain (though work is displayed). Excellent behaviour is encouraged through adults modelling. Children are encouraged to communicate independently with their peers and resolve issues with each other before there is adult intervention. Should further support be required beyond preschool, our special needs coordinator will seek advice via West Berkshire Early years Support Team and/or other appropriate pathways supported by them.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Your child will be observed constantly by all members of staff and staff are constantly exchanging information. There are regular staff planning meetings where any important and relevant information regarding your child will be shared. Before your child is 3 years a 2 year old progress check is carried out and you are given feedback. An individual coverage sheet of your child's progress in relation to the early years foundation stage curriculum is plotted at the end of each term. There will be reports written about your child's progress twice a year and you will be able to give feedback to us on this report. Once a year there is a parent consultation session where you meet your child's key worker and discuss their progress. Your child also has involvement when they can choose their best work to display on the wall or put in their special book. If your child attends another setting, we communicate either by phone call, writing or by an arranged visit as well as sending them any recent reports on your child's progress. If your child is on an SENS or SAPP then we review progress, with a regularity agreed by you and what is most appropriate for your child.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

All of our activities are risk assessed by the supervisor and special needs coordinator for the children we have in setting, so if there are children with additional needs or SEND their needs are included in the assessment to ensure all risks are minimised for them. All trips are chosen to accommodate their needs and consultation with parents to ensure they are happy with the activity. The supervisor or special needs coordinator will visit the site beforehand to ensure that it is appropriate.  Letters go out to all parents in advance of each visit for consent and will enable the parent to help prepare the child.


8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Our building is fully accessible for wheelchair users. We have wide gates, double doors and no steps up. We keep the environment clutter free for the visually impaired and we have a disabled toilet.


9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

When your child moves on to a new setting or school, our special needs coordinator and the rest of our staff will work with your child to prepare them for it. We will talk with your child about the change, how they feel and what they have to look forward to. The special needs coordinator will communicate directly with the special needs coordinator at the new school and ensure that they receive all relevant reports. She will also ring the school to discuss your child with the relevant members of staff including the headteacher. We contact every receiving school to invite the new teacher to visit our setting and meet your child. Visits to the local primary school (Bradfield Cof E Primary) are organised during the year. If necessary, extra visits will be organised to help make the transition easy with our special needs coordinator joining your child. Once the child is established in the new setting or school we will ring up to check on progress.


10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

We always have a flexible approach when working with children with special educational needs. We work closely with parents and always invite them in to discuss progress and ask for feedback. We also send out questionnaires to all families to supply feedback on the provision. Our staff attend training courses, seek opportunities for networking and take it upon themselves to keep up to date as much as possible' looking at best practice as standard. Based on the feedback we receive we adjust our practices to meet the needs of the children as fully as possible.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

We ask for regular feedback from parents through our half termly committee meetings. Parents are invited to contact the parent representative on the committee to offer feedback.This can be done via email or face to face. We send questionnaires home for parents to complete and there is also a section on each report for feedback. Staff at St Peter's are very keen to talk to all parents and have an open approach. Should an issue arise, parents are advised to take it up with the staff member or key worker in question, followed by the supervisor and then the chairman. Formal meetings will be held with the chairman for matters which can not be resolved after initial contact with staff members.
