Assessment plays an important part in helping us to recognise children’s progress, understand their needs, and to plan activities and support. Ongoing assessment is an integral part of the learning and development process. We observe your child to understand their level of achievement, interests and learning style. We use this information to shape learning experiences. 

Children are born ready, able and eager to learn. They actively reach out to interact with other people, and in the world around them. Development is not an automatic process. It depends on each unique child having opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments.

Staff carry out observations daily and record these as ‘snap shots’. They count as evidence towards your child’s achievements along with extended observations. Your child’s key person will set 3 targets for your child at the beginning of each term from predominately the 3 prime areas of learning. These targets are set from previous evidence and with your input. The key person will record the activities planned and their role in helping your child reach these targets. They will also take into consideration the learning styles your child is showing, these are playing & exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. At the end of each term you will be invited to attend a parents evening where you can discuss with your child’s key person the evidence collected and plan the following terms targets.

The targets set are considered with guidance from the Development Matters. This document supports practitioners in implementing the EYFS requirements. It provides a scale of development children accesses at individual paces.

 We have a Special Needs Co-ordinator who will oversee all records of all S.E.N. children and details pertaining to their needs. The Co-ordinator will support, advise and review the progress of the child with the parents, liaising with professional agencies and seeking appropriate advice as needed. All information will be discretely treated with respect and sensitivity, ensuring confidentiality at all times. The staff are aware of the S.E.N. Code of Practice. We are committed to receiving training where appropriate to extend our expertise in dealing with specific Special Needs.

Our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is responsible for record keeping and maintaining details pertaining to their needs.

The Co-ordinator will support, advice and review the progress of the child with the parents, liaising with all outside agencies and seeking appropriate advice as needed.

As appropriate the SENCO will identify and set performance targets with the parents and draw up an Individual Play Plan. (I.P.P.)

No wheelchair access but we have had children whio have used stability walkers and frames.

We understand that transition to another environment can be both exciting and anxious for children and their parents. We want the transition; either from room to room or to another setting to be as smooth as possible and we will work with you to make this happen.

When a child moves up to another room within the nursery; 

• We ensure that they are ready for the move.
• The existing room will prepare the child for their new room by simple steps, such as, using a cup with no lid, shortening sleep times.
• All team members help out in every room, this ensures that all staff know all the children by name and the children recognise all the staff.
• A few weeks before the move the child will have some visits to their new room with the support of a member of staff from their existing room.
• You will receive a letter informing you of your child’s moving up date and you will be given feedback on how your child’s visits have gone.

When your child is moving to another setting we ask that you let us know in writing at least a month before. This gives us enough time to update your child’s records and complete a transition report for the new setting. We will also work with you to ensure your child is prepared for the transition.

You will be given a copy of the transition report to add your comments and sign before it is sent to the new setting. You will be asked if you would like to arrange a meeting to discuss the report further.

We often have teachers from schools come and visit a child who will be joining them. We encourage this as the child is in a familiar and safe environment and they can see us communicating and having a good relationship with their new teacher.

We have numerous books on ‘going to school’ and have circle times were we can freely talk about what is happening and the children can see that they may not be the only person starting somewhere new. 

Constantly reflecting on our practice and differentiating for the needs of the individual children. Open door policy for parents to share ideas or concerns.

• We hope your child’s stay at Quackers Nursery will be a happy one and that parents will talk with the staff about any concerns that arise.
• We believe that the children and their parents are entitled to prompt attention to their needs and wishes.
• Should you have any query or complaint that cannot be resolved with your child’s key worker, then the nursery manager or her deputies are always available.
• All complaints are fully investigated and we keep written records of complaints and their outcomes or action taken. Complaints can be in writing or by email. We will reply to the complainant within 28 days. All written complaints records are kept for 3 years, including outcomes and action taken. A complaints form can be obtained from the nursery office.
• We will make available to Ofsted, if requested a summary of all complaints made and the action taken.
