We identify children with additional needs & SEND through observation of your child in the pre-school and liaising with you to discuss any concerns you may already have. Together we can discuss your child's progress and monitor their development, using appropriate guidance to support our findings.
We would consult you to discuss the involvement of other specialist professionals as and when this becomes necessary.
Each child at the pre-school has a Key Person who is the first point of daily contact. However, the Supervisor has particular responsibilty for children with SEND as she is the co-ordinator for Special Educational Needs (SENCO).
Your child's Key Person and the Supervisor of the pre-school will discuss with you the small targets for your child and how these can be supported at pre-school and at home. These targets may be recorded as a "play plan" to identify small areas for development together with activities which will achieve this. This may also give you ideas of activities or routines to support your child at home as well as at pre-school.
We will meet with you each half term to monitor progress and consider the support your child now needs. Additionally there is always time to speak with you daily to share good news of how your child is developing.
The Key Person will spend time with your child throughout the session, supporting them through the planned play activities.
We believe an honest approach and regular dialogue to supporting your child at pre-school and at home will be a key to success.
The curriculum can be adapted to accommodate the support identified through observation and recorded your child's play plan. We will ensure that your child has access to all our curriculum areas and that we adapt routines and activities to give your child equal opportunities with other children.
The teaching staff team will continue to use our successful strategies of positive reinforcement and modelling on a day to day basis.
We will complement this with strategies which we have discussed with you to support your child's development such as visual strategies, perhaps a photographic timetable, Maketon or rewards systems. Wherever strategies are recommended by other professionals we will endeavour to implement these successfully.
We provide staff training to support a range of SEN including behaviour management, speech and language difficulties and medical conditions. We will however, rely upon input from other professional services to support ourselves and your family; this may include Health Workers, Hungerford Children's Centre, Pre-School Teacher Counsellor, Educational Psychologists, Speech Therapist or Social Worker.
Although well resourced, we are willing to equip the pre-school with further resources deemed necessary to support your child's development, as long as the budget allows.
We wil ensure your child has access to educational support through, say, small group work or one-to-one activities all of which will be play based.
Above all, you will be involved at all times in the decisions made and approaches taken to support your child's progression.
We will make observations on how well your child is progressing and will meet with you each half term to discuss how well your child is developing or any concerns you may have. Together we will formulate an achievable target for the next short period and discuss how this can be managed at pre-school and at home.
We have always managed to include all children in all of our activities, both indoors and outdoors. We ensure we have sufficient staff to manage activities, we plan them carefully and would identify any particular support your child would need. The staff team is skilled at allowing children to access activities at different levels whilst encouraging challenge and independence.
We would communicate with you, as with other parents, via email and face to face to discuss arrangements for trips to ensure your child fully participated.
The Village Hall is on one level and is fully accessible for wheelchair users and has a disabled toilet.
We work hard to support the transition of all children to new local schools and as a result we know these schools well.
We will firstly discuss with your family arrangements for the next stage in your child's education and care. When you have chosen your next setting we will contact the school to invite the teacher to visit your child at the setting and welcome you to meet the staff member who visits. We are also willing, and have experience of, accompanying children with SEN to visit their next school to support their transition.
We will send a report to the next school outlining your child's development and needs and will meet with yourselves and the school staff team as necessary.
We review our effectiveness of our SEN provision as part of our setting reviews at regular staff meetings. We would welcome your contribution to this and would value your feed back.
Please visit our website www.greatsheffordunderfives.co.uk where you will find all the necessary contact details.
We would welcome your feedback on our provision. Please address the feedback to,
