Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

All children are monitored closely by their key person and if a child is not showing typical development for their age they are discussed with the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) to decide if intervention is needed. If it is decided that a child does not require additional support at the moment, then they will be monitored with the SENCO until they are showing typical development for their age or until further support is appropriate.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

All parents are informed either during the parent consultations (twice a year) or by discussions with their key person of how their children are being supported. If children are entered into small focus groups parents may be informed by a letter in their tray.

If a child is identified as having additional needs parents are invited in for a consultation to discuss how best to support their child.  If arrangements are changed during a session to benefit a child with additional needs parents are informed on collection.  Parents are invited to share suggestions at any time with their child's Key person as we would like to make sure they are involved in any decisions about their child.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We look at all children as individuals and adapt our teaching to children's abilities not their ages. We provide differentiated activities to ensure that children with additional needs are being taught the most appropriate part of the EYFS for them.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

Most of the strategies we use for all children will be used effectively for children with additional needs. Others may include one to one teaching, adult/child as a model for them to follow, ensuring less distractions, use of Makaton, visual aids, lots of smiles, praise and encouragement.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

Small focus groups and someone to one time are offered to help children to master things which they are struggling with. A child with additional needs will get the support that they need in order to make the most of their time with us. We try not to put any limitations on this as it is dependent on each individual and what support they need.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

All children's progress is monitored by their key person against the standards set in the EYFS (early years foundation stage). Children with additional needs are also set targets on their SAPP ( Support and Achievement Play Plan) which is completed with the parents each term. The SAPP is evaluated with the parents and the key person termly, so the parents are involved at all points of this. A parent consultation is also offered twice a year which is another chance for parents to discuss their child's progress.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

To ensure that all children with additional needs are included in the same activities and trips as the other children extra support will be offered when needed. If needed one to one support will be given to support them during an activity or they may need different resources. We will always do our best to ensure that all children are given the same opportunities by providing needed support or resources.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Kintbury Pre-School is all on one level with disabled access through a separate door. Although there is one area accessed by three steps if we had a child that was unable to access it, we would ensure that they were not missing out on any activities.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

Normal transitions are supported by discussions within the setting, new teachers are welcome to visit our setting and this is taken up each year by the local primary school. We produce a transition report for each child which is either given to the new setting or given to the parent to pass on. We also take children up to the local primary school to meet their new teacher and listen to a story. Transitions for a child with additional needs would be tailored to suit them and their needs with a parent consultation where needed. Additional transition visits will be arranged if needed as well as a transition booklet.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

Overall effectiveness of SEN provision is assessed through Childrens progress, Key Person's evaluation and parent's opinion. Each term a SAPP (Support and Achievement Play Plan) will be put in place with parent's views being essential and this will be evaluated with the parents at the same meeting that writes the next terms SAPP.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

If you would like information about registering, please contact us by e-mail at preschoolkintbury@gmail.com by phone on 07765040269 or pop in and see us at Preston Hall, Gainsborough Avenue, Kintbury, RG17 9XN.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
