Education Welfare and Safeguarding Service (EWSS)

Education Welfare and Safeguarding Service (EWSS) works to ensure regular school attendance of children of statutory school age by supporting schools, meeting with children and families and liaising and working closely with other agencies. Where necessary the EWSS carries out the statutory duty of legal action when efforts to help improve school attendance have failed in order to secure the child’s regular attendance at school.
To provide guidance and support for pupils at risk of exclusion.
The EWSS is also responsible for issuing:
- work permits for children of statutory school age who have a part-time job.
- Performance licences
- Chaperone licences

The EWS can be accessed at the two offices, in schools and by home visits by arrangement.
The EWS works with children of statutory school age in mainstream, academies, special schools and pupil referral units where attendance is 80% or less of which 80% of the absence is unauthorised.
Schools and parents can contact the EWS by email, telephone, in writing or by visiting one of the offices.
