Busy Bees Newbury is a 104 place nursery that is purpose built on one level. This allows all rooms direct access to a large garden with a designated area for the small babies and children under two years. The nursery is open for 52 weeks of the year, only closed on Bank Holidays and our opening hours are 7.30am-6.00pm. The sessions range from full days to half days morning or afternoon and we also offer places for 2 ,3, and 4 year old funding.

The nursery has its own private car park in the grounds of Newbury College campus, so is a safe area.

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

If you, as a parent  have a concern about your child's special educational needs at the nursery and you decide to raise this with us then we have a referral process.

In our nursery with have a designated member of staff who is the SEND-CO and she has attended the company Busy Bees and Local Authority training annually. If you talked to your child's key person they will liaise with the Special Needs       Co coordinator(SEND-CO) and the Nursery Manager. 

Busy Bees Newbury offers all children a key person who plans learning opportunities for your child to support his or her development. Twice a year a Develeopment Sumary is written to record how your child is developing in the Prime and Specific Areas of Learning. It is through these Development Summaries, written observations in nursery, home observations and partnership with parents, that the staff can identify whether your child may have SEN.

We also offer parent evenings to discuss your child's progress and following the Development Summaries each child has an individual tracker and this information is fed into the Nursery Group Tracker and this information is used to support any areas of concern

The staff use the EYFS Development Matters and the Early Years Outcomes as a guide to the stages of your child's development and these documents help us to assess how your child is progressing and if appropriate if there is any concerns.

We like to think here at Busy Bees we offer parents the time to verbally discuss any concerns you may have about your child and to support you with our knowledge and experience.


2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We can help you and your child when areas of development are highlighted and it may be thought that your child has additional needs:which may include medical, physical,behavioural, emotional and developmental and education difficulties. We would set up a meeting with you, the SEND-CO and the Nursery Manager to discuss how we can best support you and your child. 

After discussions we ask your child's Key Person to carry out  planned observations and then to share this information with the nursery SEND-CO, the manager and of course you as parents

We would ask you to give written consent to liaise with appropriate outside agencies for advice and support. 

You would also be asked to complete a Medical form about your child if needed.. Also if needed we would carry out a risk assessment to identify any hazards to be able to implement necessary controls

The SENDCO then liases with the local authority SENDCO, inclusion officer etc and requests a nursery visit to see your child

Here at Busy Bees Newbury we would also be able to access additional staff training to help support your child

The Nursery SENCO will keep you informed and she will work with your child'Key person to create and plan approaches and strategies in conjunction with the Early Years SENDCO having regard to the Code of Practice

Your child with SEN should have their needs met

We like to try to meet your child's needs in mainstream early years educational setting like us in Busy bees

We will try to encourage your child to tell us their views and take them into account. We believe Parents have a vital role to play in supporting your child'seducastion

You child would be offered a broad, balanced and relevant education including an appropriate curriculum here at the nursery


3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

What we offer to you and your child is a IEP (Individual Educational Plan) outlining clear targets for that child.

We work with the outside agencies with their targets  to create a full plan for your child

Your child's Key Person will follow these target through into the child's individual planning and all this information and data is kept in your child's Learning Journal

Busy Bees can offer your child and you a Graduated Approach

The staff who work day to day with your child and the SEND-CO can access advice and support from outside agencies. Together we can ensure we provide interventions that are additional to or different from those provided as apart of the nursery's usual curriculum and strategies (EYFS)

Your child will  be included in all, the children's activities and approaches to ensure that your child is progreessing. Differentiating the activities so that your child can achieve and that he/she can experience success and gain confidence

If your child needs extra support within the nursery then he or she may move on to Early Action Plus (EYAP) with support from our local authority inclusion officer

We can offer your child and you regular reviews of the IEP (every 6 weeks) and you will be incuded in these reviews via a meeting with the SENDCO  so that you are kept in touch with the progress your child is making

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We can offer you and your child a variety of teaching strategies dependant on your child's individual needs. 

We offer Makaton sign language

We can create a visual time table on the wall in your child'sroom so that he/she can have an understanding of what is happening next in their day.

Your child can have an individual visual timetable set into smaller chunks of time, traffic light cards to support when things can happen and when they cant

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

The nursery has a member of staff who has received training from the company and from the Local Authority.

The local SENDCO is very supportive and we also liase closely with speech and language therapist.

We open our doors to any specialist staff to visit the nursery and help the staff and  your child's Key Person to enhance the learning opportunities for your child with SEN

We have support from Berkshire Health care

We also work with CYPIT (Children's and Young People's Integrated Therapies Service

West Berkshire Pre School Teacher Counsellors also support us

All these outside agencies offer the nursery support and advice and liaise directly with the nursery SEND-CO who  relates all information to the manager, the Key Person and the Parents

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

We review any child with SEN every 6 weeks and then update their IEP.

Development summaries are carried out every 6 months and your child's development recorded on and individual tracker which is converted onto the nursery Tracker

Around 2years 3 months we complete a 2 year old Check which is shared with your child's Health Visitor. Written permission to share our findings is requested before your child would start nursery. The 2 year old check is similar to the Development Summaries 

Development Summaries and 2 year old checks are all shared with parents and every Parent would receive a copy

We carry out child Voice observations to ensure your child's voice would be heard. These are placed in your child's Learning Journal

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

To support your child we may possibly need to carry out a risk assessment and we have support from our company Head Office Health and Safety team to do this if needed.

During the settling in process we may need to ask additional questions to support this risk assessment and the company Health and Safety Advisor may also visit the nursery to meet with you to discuss how we can best support your child

This meeting at the very beginning of your child's nursery experience will help us , as we can listen to what you as parents  can tell us about your child's needs. During your child';s time at nursery we may go on trips so prior to this we will reevaluate the risk assessment and ensure staff are available to support your child on this events

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

The building is accessible for wheelchairs with large double front doors and the access doors from the rooms to the garden are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. 

In the event of evacuation of the building we have wide side gates to enable us to help your child exit the grounds to a place of sfaety

The nursery has an accessible toilet with facilities. In the event that you child needs changing facilities and we are unable to use the normal changing facilities in the nursery we would arrange a room to change your child in a more accessible way.

Part of the support we offer to you and your child is a range of visual timetables, Makaton and if youre child has English as an additonal language we have visual language booklets which your child can point to , thus communicating their needs. 

At the settling in process we will ask you to complete a "Communication with Me form with key words to allow us to create your child's own booklet with words and photos

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

Before your child starts at the nursery the SEND-CO within the setting will decide on your child's Key Person and they will be involved in discussions about your child's additional need. You will also be invited to meet the Key Person with your child to discuss information regarding your child at nursery

Along with a risk assessment if needed, we will ensure that we gather all information medical etc so that we can be well prepared for yoru child. Medical information will be documented and the Health and Safety Company Advisor will be informed so that we can ensure all necessary support arrangements are in place

When it is time for your child to move rooms within the nursery, we will inform you about 2 months before of the date in writing. You will be given an information pack about the new room and a Key Person Information document to tell you who your child's new Key Person will be. 

The nursery transition process is to inform Parents of the date in advance so that your child can do as many visits to the new room as possible. You will be invited into the nursery , and at that meeting will be your child's Key Person, the new Key Person, the manager and the nursery SEND-CO. This will be an opportunity for you to raise questions you may have about the new room and will be an open discussion to ensure we support your child in their transition. You will be given a timetable of visits so you know when your child has visited the new room.

The staff will be able to tell you throughout the 2 months how your child is adapting to the new room and if we need to make any changes to accomodate your child's needs.

The same process will take place prior to your child going to school. We complete a "Seamless Transition" form which includes comments from you, the SEND-CO and the Key Person so that the school  will be informed of your child's development stages.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

We assess our nursery and the provision we offer  to children with additional needs in a variety of ways. The manager gathers information from parents via a CEEDA survey, also staff contribute to a SEIP ( self evaluation improvement plan) asking them what areas in the nursery we need to improve. This information is gathered and fed into our nursery Self Evaluation Form which is accessible by Ofsted our governing body


11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

Initially as a parent you would either access the nursery website www.busybeeschildcare.co.uk/nursery/newburyvia a search engine. Via this website you can book a visit to see around the nursery. We receive an email to inform us that you are interested in seeing the nursery and will call you to confirm the visit. Once you have had a tour of the nursery you would  be given an information pack which contains a registration form. If you would like you child to attend the  nursery then all you need to do is return the completed registration form with your registration fee of £25. Also if you would like to come into the nursery for a chat before you register your child that can also be arranged.

Before starting there will be pre visits arranged , usually 3 but more can be offered if you feel your child needs them

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?
