Beenham Pre-School is situated in the small village of Beenham with easy access to local villages, Theale and Thatcham. We welcome up to 24 children per session. We have freeflow access to 2 large outside play areas on both grass and concrete which we are able to use all year round. We are the only mainstream pre-school in Berkshire to have accreditation from the National Makaton Charity and we are part of the West Berkshire "Every Child a Talker (ECAT)" programme.  We have recently completed staff-wide training in LGBTQI+ Inclusivity and Restorative Practice. We have our own ELSA supporting emotional literacy. Our motto is "Learning together through Play". We involve parents and guardians in our sessions, planning and overall management whenever possible and aim to create a "family feel" to our setting. Our last four annual Satisfaction Surveys have given us a 100% approval rating from our families.

Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

Children are assesed during their first few weeks in setting by their Key Person and a senior member of staff. For children joining from other settings we would exchange information with staff already familiar with the child.  We also invite parents/carers to spend time with us and their child in setting during the settling in period.

All children are closely monitored thoughout their time with us. We operate a system of Next Steps so that development is tracked on a half-termly basis. We produce a detailed Learning Journey with termly Summaries of Achievement which sit alongside the Next Steps forms.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We encourage parents/carers to talk to staff informally at the beginning or end of the sessions.  We recognise that parents know their children best and we welcome any involvement from parents in our day to day activities.

We invite parents to book appointments with us at any time in the term should they wish to discuss any issues at greater length. Equally we would invite parents/carers in should we have any concerns.

The Learning Journeys are shared with parents on a ternly basis and ask that parents read them carefully and make their own additions based on what they have observed at home.

We publish a weekly Newsletter which informs parents about the activiies in which the group has been engaged.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We plan for each child as an individual using the EYFS curriculum as the starting point for that planning. Each Key Person is given opportunities to introduce activities to the planning which may relate to an individual child or a small group of children in their care. We also ensure through differentiated planning that all of our activities can be adapted to suit all levels of development and ability. We re-asses our activities at the end of the session  and note what has been sucessful and how we might improve the activity for next time.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We believe that our tailored approach to planning lends itself to early interventon when any additional needs are identified. We aim to ensure that all children, whatever their stage or ability range, make a positive contribution to our pre-school community.

Key Persons are able to take extra training should this be necessary to provide the best possible provision for an individual child.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

Historically we have recruited additional members of staff to enable us to provide the best possible support for a child in the setting. We have also purchased additional resources specific to the needs of an individual child.

These decisions are made in consulation with staff, parents/cacers and other professionals involved in the care of the child concerned.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Children are assesed during their first few weeks in setting by their Key Person and also a senior member of staff and this provides us with our baseline assessment. We also invite parents/carers to spend time with us and their child in setting during the settling in period.

All children are closely monitored thoughout their time with us. We operate a system of Next Steps so that development is tracked on a half-termly basis. This information is recorded in the detailed Learning Journey with termly Summaries of Achievement which sit alongside the Next Steps forms to ensure that each child is working on age approriate and achievable goals at any time.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

At the initial planning stage we consider each activity with each child in mind to ensure that nobody is excluded from any learning opportunity.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Our setting in single storey with wheelchair access.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

We have fortnightly visits with our local primary school when we spend time in the Reception Class.

We welcome staff from other primary schools to visit us to meet the children in setting and we make our Learning Journeys available to them at the end of the summer term.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

We try to maintain a constant dialogue between staff, parents/carers and other professionals involved with any child in our setting. We ask that all parties involved in the care of the child give honest and open feedback on the effectiveness of our provision and we hope this that, combined with a constant process of self-evaluation and refelection will ensure that we provide the best care possible at any time.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

Mrs Paula Read, Manager.

You can also contact us via Facebook or Twitter (@beenhampre) or through an email link to our website : www.beenhampreschool.org

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

We welcome verbal feedback at any time.

We circulate a Parents' Quesionnaire on a yearly basis, which is confidential and returned to the Committee Chairperson directly.

We have a full set of policies which are shared with new parents/carers when they first join the setting, and these polocies include procedures to follow should it be necessary to make a complaint.
