Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure

Calvert Trust Exmoor was established in 1996 in 44 acres of spectacular landscape on the edge of Exmoor. Its objective was to enable people of all ages with physical, learning, sensory and behavioural disabilities to achieve their potential through adventurous activities. That remains our purpose today.

Our accommodation, facilities and equipment allow us to cater for people with all levels of disability, and our catering team provides meals for those on special diets or needing pureed or liquidised food. For two years in a row, we have been rated 5* for activity accommodation by Visit England – the only activity centre to be rated so highly. We hold a gold standard accreditation from the Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres and have won numerous tourism awards.

Through the challenge of outdoor activities, and with the help of our highly experienced and friendly instructors, our guests develop new skills, make new friends and build self-confidence and greater independence. By the time they leave, their physical and mental wellbeing is improved, they have created wonderful memories and achieved far more than they had dreamed possible.

By the end of 2019 we hope to have supported another 3,500 people to stay at Calvert Trust Exmoor, and a further 500 to make a day visit. We aspire to extend our reach to more people with disabilities who in the course of their normal lives would be unable to participate in challenging outdoor activities such as those we offer here.

Our visitors have a range of abilities and many have multiple and high needs (see Figure, right). We welcome all ages, from the very young to the very elderly.  We work closely with other organisations including schools and charities to reach those who are likely to benefit the most.
We also give carers a much-needed break from their usual routines and responsibilities, and one mother told us about the difference the visit had made.
