Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

We observe, assess and track children's progress against developmental stages in order to identify delay/advancement and plan for the indivdual needs of the child.

We regularly discuss children's development during staff/planning meetings.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

Each child will have a keyperson who will speak to parents informally on a regular basis for a continual exchange of information and are available for pre-arranged formal discussions.

We compile Learning Journey's which parent's are able to view on request.

We produce twice yearly, written summaries and hold annual Parent's evenings.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We provide appropriate resources, flexible and differentiated activities and ensure accessibility for all children according to the individual needs of each child and in discussion with parents and in co-ordination with other agencies.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We adapt our strategies according to the needs and interests of the child and in consultation with parents/carers and appopriate outside agencies.  We access appropriate training to ensure that the needs of the children are best met.

Staff have basic Makaton training

We use visual prompts and cues.

A member of staff is an Early Language Practitioner, who provides advice to staff on appropriate strategies for language development.

Staff keep their skills up to date through training.

We provide 1-1 support, if required.

We have a quiet area for reflection and rest.

We work closely with outside agencies.

We are part of the scheme Every Child a Talker (ECAT)

We have a designated SENCo

We attend training appropriate to the needs of the individual child.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Children with special needs will be given SAPP (Support and Achievement Play Plan), which are agreed with parent's and appropriate outside agencies to ensure they meet the individual needs of the child, These are regularly reviewed and parent's reguarly updated on their progress.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

All activities are made available to all children and differentiated according to the needs of the individual child and additional support will be provided, as necessary.

Our classrooms have an access ramp for ease of access into the classroom and outside area and a disabled toilet.

All children have a transitional report on leaving the setting and we have contact with local schools.  Those who have been identified as requiring additional support, we will work closely with other settings/school to ensure a smooth transition.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

We review our provision regularly, informally and in staff and planning meetings and ask parents/carers for their input.
