Shaw-cum-Donnington CE Primary School

Last updated: 18/09/2023

Shaw-cum-Donnington is a small primary school on the northern outskirts of Newbury, Berkshire. The beautiful, red-brick, listed building has quirky corridors and a ‘Starlight Room’ on the upper level, named by the children and characterised by a steep, pointed ceiling.

The semi-rural location means that the school is surrounded by greenery, mature trees, flowers nurtured by our Gardening Club and a pond – a ‘living classroom’ on our doorstep.

The children here enjoy a stable, secure and happy environment where my colleagues and I aim to make each child feel special. We want our pupils to have the best possible educational start and to this end have worked with governors, members of the Church and other stakeholders to develop our vision and mission statement below.

Our Vision
We will provide a stimulating learning environment that engages children of all abilities and instils in them a love of learning.  As a Christian school, we want every child to know that they are important to God and loved by him.

Our Mission
In order for our pupils to have the best possible educational start, we will:

  • build a curriculum that is broad, varied and exciting, as well as one that supports the development of life skills such as collaboration, perseverance and creativity;
  • enable our children to grow in confidence and independence and instil in them a sense of responsibility for their learning and high hopes for the future;
  • demonstrate that high standards of attainment for pupils of all ages are important to us and this is underpinned by our commitment to working with parents to secure exemplary behaviour and positive attitudes to learning;
  • promote Christian values in our everyday lives and relationships. We help pupils to show their love to others and act with kindness and provide opportunities for pupils to develop their faith;
  • strive to make all members of the community feel welcome at the school and hope that our ethos is felt beyond the school gates.

Our Ethos
Recognising its historic foundation, the school will preserve and develop its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the Church at parish and diocesan levels.  The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.
