Choosing a school

When your child is old enough to go to school, you may want him or her to attend your nearest mainstream school or you may want to consider other mainstream schools. At secondary transfer time you will also be thinking about which school will suit your child. Sometimes children may change school at other times too, for example if they are moving from a special school to a mainstream school or if they just need a fresh start.

All schools have the same legal duties to meet the needs of children with SEN. All schools also have budgets allocated to them for SEN provision. Schools are not able to refuse to admit a child on the grounds that they have SEN.

The Local Authority is not able to recommend schools. However, if you would like some support when contacting schools and seeking a place for your child, please contact the SENDIASS Service (SEN and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service).

Please remember to take transport into consideration when choosing a school. Information about Home to School Transport can be found here: http://info.westberks.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=27823
